The Ms.Education of Ms. Lauryn Hill

Have you ever listened to Ms Lauryn Hill? If your answer is no, well then you should go for it! And  let me tell you why:  because  Lauryn Hill is one of the most influential and talented artists  of our generation!

In fact, Ms Hill has become a legend just by releasing only one solo studio album, all written, arranged and composed by herself, earning a well deserved 10th position in the Rolling Stone 100 greatest albums.

With her work Lauryn Hill is often credited as the artist who popularized the technique of blending rap and melodic singing together, sometimes referred to as melodic rap. Thanks to her musical features she also influenced many contemporary artists such as Nicky Minaj, Lizzo and Kanye West as well as their music, becoming one of the most sampled artists in modern music. From the album Miseducation on, I believe we could set the beginning of the new Millennium’s era, at least in music matters, as she contributed to creating our current pop music.

Not only is she  a musical genius, but in her songs she also fought for important issues, such as being both a woman and a black person during a period of social revolutions. Her lyrics are so personal, meaningful, powerful and relatable that are impossible to ignore. Unfortunately she decided to retire from public life, but she is still releasing singles and she is still touring. By the way,  rumors say she may come up with a Miseducation tour soon and I really hope so!

I hope I have convinced you to listen to Lauryn Hill by now! If you do, please feel free to send me your own opinion, as I always like talking about music!

Lauryn Noelle Hill was born on May 26, 1975, in East Orange, New Jersey. She grew up surrounded by the music played by her parents, and she started performing at High School, but her popularity came with the Fugees (1994-1997), the trio formed by Pras Michel, Wyclef Jean and herself, and their second album “The Score”. In 1997 the band split up and they all started a solo career. In 1998 Hill released her solo debut album “The Miseducation of Ms Lauryn Hill”, going down in  history after winning eight Grammys out of her ten nominations, which made her the first female musician to achieve such a result. The album was mainly written, arranged and produced by herself with the collaboration of many skilled artists such as  ’Angelo and Santana.
