Threatened paradise

When we think about pollution we generally imagine cities full of smog and CO2, plastic islands in
the ocean or toxic fumes produced by industries. We absolutely don’t think about some of the most popular and magic islands in the world: Maldives.
These islands, located in the Indian ocean, are considered an earthly paradise for everyone that needs a relaxing holiday. They are a paradise land for a lot of animals and most of all fish. Just over 50 meters from the beach you can observe the incredible Coral Reef, among the richest of fish and coral in the oceans. You can practice snorkeling or diving and see manta rays, turtles and little sharks around you not farther than 10 meters.
When you think about these islands you don’t normally think about the problem of pollution, do
you? Well, some of these earthly paradises, especially those which are inhabited, are full of garbage and plastic. The first problem is the little interest of some of the inhabitants that seem to be insensitive to this problem, maybe because they have not been properly taught how to recycle. People do not receive an adequate environmental education and they do not even know how important it is. Another problem is clearly the pollution of the sea; the water is warming up and it is becoming deadly for some living beings.
Climate change is destroying the coral reef and the life of so many animals. It’s not dangerous only for the melting of ice but also for the coral’s life. In the Coral Reef live about 25% of sea animals; unfortunately warm currents, like Ninõ, are becoming more frequent and harmful. Corals’ bleaching jeopardizes the safety of the corals’ life and of the microcosm around them. Some university researchers are working on projects to regenerate the Coral Reef by implanting alive corals on the dead reef.
Would you like to contribute to the project adopting a coral?
